PM Modi’s meeting with Soorma athletes of Commonwealth Games, said – used to watch matches with alarm

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday met the Indian contingent who returned after participating in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. The Prime Minister said that the entire nation is proud of the achievements of our athletes in sports. He said that people in India were watching against their children by setting alarms. PM Modi lauded all the medal winning athletes including veteran Sharath Kamal, PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu and Bajrang Punia. Apart from this, the Prime Minister also praised those who won a medal for India by participating in the Commonwealth Games for the first time. Indian players won 61 medals including 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze in the Birmingham Games. While addressing the players, the Prime Minister said, ‘You all were competing there but due to the difference of time, crores of Indians were playing in India. Till late night, the eyes of the countrymen were on your every action. Many people slept with alarms that would update your performance. You all have a big role in promoting this interest towards sports and for this you all deserve congratulations.

“An honest assessment of our performance this time is not possible only by the number of medals,” he said. Many of our players were seen playing close matches this time and this too is no less than a medal. The point would have been a second but we will cover that too because I believe in you. He said, ‘We are strengthening the sports which have been our strength. We are also leaving our mark in new sports. I appreciate the effort, hard work and mood of both the teams for the way we are reclaiming our legacy in hockey.

India won medals in four new sports

The Prime Minister said, “This time we have created a new way of winning in four new games as compared to last time. From lawn balls to athletics, there has been a phenomenal performance, which is going to increase the interest of the youth in new sports. Similarly, we have to keep improving performance in new games. He said, ‘All the senior players led as expected and the youngsters did wonders. The young comrades I spoke to before the Games kept their promise.

The Prime Minister said, ‘I am glad that you took the time to come to my residence as a family member. As every Indian is proud of joining you with the success of your accomplishment, I am also proud. Two days later, the country is going to complete 75 years of independence. It is a matter of pride that the country is entering the nectar of independence with an inspiring achievement from the hard work of all of you.

Players also appreciated for participating in Chess Olympiad

Congratulating the players and medal winners of the Chess Olympiad held at Mamallapuram, he said, “In the last few weeks, the country has achieved two great achievements in the field of sports. With a historic performance in the Commonwealth Games, the country successfully organized Chess Olympiad for the first time and also did the best in this sport by maintaining the rich tradition. I also congratulate all the players participating in the Chess Olympiad and all the medal winners on this occasion.

Prime Minister Modi said, ‘Before the start of the Commonwealth Games, I had promised you that when we return, we will make a victory festival together. I believed that you would come out victorious. My management was also that no matter how busy it is, I will celebrate this victory festival with you. Today it is the occasion of the celebration of victory.
