Anil Chauhan, one of India’s biggest vehicle thieves, has been arrested by the Delhi Police from central Delhi after a search of over three months. Chauhan is accused of stealing more than 5,000 cars and is known for his lavish lifestyle with expensive clothes, gold bracelets.
Has already been arrested
Police said that Anil Chauhan used to come from North-East states and go away after stealing the car. Anil Chauhan is successfully selling stolen cars in Gangtok, parts of Assam, Nepal and other places with the help of 25-30 associates. Although he has been arrested in the past, the police said that finding him was not an easy task. According to the news of the Indian Express, the cost of one of his houses is Rs 10 crore.
Used to ride in expensive cars
A team led by Inspector Sandeep Godara investigates the theft of high-end SUVs and sedans in central Delhi and suspects Chauhan. An official said that, “Teams were sent to Assam, Sikkim, Nepal and NCR to trace him. To evade arrest, he drives around in expensive cars and masquerades as a businessman or a government official. He was a contractor working with the Assam government and has a strong hold there.”
Also used to smuggle rhino horns
Over the past two decades, Chauhan has not only stole cars but also hunted rare animals like rhinoceros for their horns. Police said he also allegedly smuggled illegal weapons with his cars. He is involved in more than 181 cases and was declared a proclaimed offender by the court. The ED has attached his 10 crore villas and other properties. The officer said, “He never stops. He has been arrested several times but used to go back to steal the car. They have three main receivers in Assam, Nepal and Gangtok. He steals cars from Delhi, Noida and Meerut and takes them to his receiver. All the cars are sold in a month or two to avoid the police. Chauhan flies back to his hideouts only to show that he is not involved in any crime,”
Three wives and seven children
Chauhan had three wives and seven children, who left him after the ED’s raids and arrests. Police said the two wives claimed that they were not aware of Chauhan’s criminal activities and thought he was a car dealer.
Car theft started in 1990
Shweta Chauhan, DCP (Central) said, “Anil Chauhan was last arrested in Dispur in Assam in January but was released on bail. This time we are presenting his rap sheet in court so that he doesn’t come out soon. According to records, he began stealing in the early 1990s and was arrested and convicted in several cases.
Was trying to smuggle drugs to customers
Anil Chauhan’s intention was not fulfilled even after stealing 5000 vehicles, he had also made a plan to supply drugs to his customers. But after the arrest of Delhi Police, the matter came to light.
