Jaishankar’s debut speech at the United Nations

External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Saturday. This was his debut in Unga as foreign minister and in his first speech he lashed out at China. In place of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jaishankar took the front here and gave a message to the Mahasabha on behalf of the PM. Jaishankar told the world from this platform that India as a country has come to a position where it is able to easily take up the biggest responsibility. The 77th session of Unga is going on in New York City, USA and diplomats are present here along with heads of state of many countries.

China’s debt trap
S Jaishankar targeted China’s debt policy without naming it. He said, “While India continues to contribute for the betterment of the world, we also recognize the decline in the international scenario. The world is already grappling with the economic challenges of COVID-19. The debt situation in developing countries is very precarious. After this, he further said, ‘The situation in some countries has worsened due to the Kovid epidemic and mutual conflict.’ Jaishankar was pointing towards Sri Lanka. After this he mentioned China and Pakistan.

Zero tolerance policy
Jaishankar said that India, which has been burning in the fire of cross-border terrorism for many decades, now follows a ‘zero tolerance’ policy for this. In our view there is no justification for any kind of terrorism, whatever its motivation. And no matter what one may say, blood stains can never be covered up.’ During this, Foreign Minister Jaishankar reprimanded China’s stand on UNSC 1267.

China defends terrorists
Jaishankar said, “The UN responds to terrorism by banning its masters. Those who politicize UNSC 1267 sometimes go to the extent of defending terrorists. Believe me, this neither serves their interests nor their reputation. When Jaishankar said this, his direct reference was towards China. China has repeatedly blocked proposals to block Pakistan-based terrorists in recent months.
