Clashes between two sides over Diwali fireworks in Vadodara, Gujarat, 19 people detained

A clash broke out between two communities in Gujarat’s Vadodara city over fireworks on Diwali. After this, the police took 19 people from both the sides into custody. An official gave this information on Tuesday. The incident took place late Monday night at around 12:45 in the communally sensitive Panigate area.

Vadodara Deputy Commissioner of Police Yashpal Jaganiya said that among those taken into custody was a man who allegedly hurled a bomb at a policeman from a house on the third floor, about an hour after the clash broke out.

According to the official, no one was injured in the incident. He said that a motorcycle parked in the area had caught fire after a rocket fell.

He said that after a dispute arose over bursting of firecrackers and throwing rocket bombs at each other, people from both sides started pelting stones at each other.

After the incident, security forces have been deployed in the area and the situation is under control, the official said. He said suspects from both the communities were being questioned.
