Suspects were about to blast at 5 places in Coimbatore
According to the CCTV footage, three IS suspects, Riyaz, Firoz and Nawaz, were seen keeping two cylinders and three drums in Mubeen’s car. They had kept explosives in the car around 11.30 pm on Saturday night. The fourth suspect, Mohammad Thalka, had given the car to Mubeen and one of his relatives. All of them were residents of GM Nagar near Ukkadam in Coimbatore.
During the search, 75 kg of potassium nitrate, charcoal and aluminum powder were also recovered from Mubeen’s house. Apart from this, a piece of paper was found, in which the names of 5 places of Coimbatore Police Commissionerate, Collectorate, Victoria Hall, Coimbatore Railway Station and Race Course were written.
Ismail, one of the five arrested in this case, was extradited from the UAE in 2020 at the request of India. Thalka’s father Nawab Khan is an accused in the 1998 Coimbatore serial blasts, in which 58 people were killed. He was a member of the banned al-Ummah. The Nawab had come to his home on parole in March. Police is collecting details of those who met him at that time.
NIA had questioned Mubeen in 2019 too
Mubeen was also interrogated by the NIA in 2019. Mubeen was suspected to be close to Mohammed Azharuddin, the mastermind of the Easter Sunday blasts in Sri Lanka, but was released at the time due to lack of prosecutable evidence. Mubeen was a staunch follower of Azharuddin Jahran Hashim. Azharuddin is in Viyur Central Jail in Thrissur district.
On October 18, intelligence agencies had given a warning
According to police sources, the ministry, in an alert sent on October 18, 2022, said that some local leaders had directed the cadre to attack leaders of Hindu organizations after the government banned PFI. Suspected activists of PFI and its allies attacked Hindu outfit leaders and sympathizers with Molotov cocktails in Tamil Nadu. The ministry had asked the state government to enhance the security of key persons who may be the target of the attacks.
Mubeen’s body was refused to be buried
The NIA had searched Mubeen’s residence in August 2019. Mechanical engineer Mubeen was married and has two children. The body of Mubeen, who was killed in the blast, was refused burial by the Jamaat leaders of Kottamedu and its surrounding areas, but they agreed only after the request of the police.
A scan of Mubeen’s mobile phone revealed that he had searched YouTube for DIY videos of bomb making. At the same time, he had also sent a message, in which it was written – If you hear the news of my death, forgive me. Pray for me and come to my death.
