Why can’t everyone see ₹2000 notes? The reason came to the fore, this strong disclosure was made in RTI

2000 rupee note: When was the last time you saw 2000 rupee note? It might have been a long time ago. Now think why would this have happened? Yes, the reason for this has now come to the fore. Actually, not a single note of Rs 2,000 has been printed for the last three years. In such a situation, this note (2000 rupee note) is not equal in circulation. This has been revealed in a response sought under a Right to Information (RTI) filed by news agency IANS. Demonetisation was announced by the government on November 8, 2016 by banning the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes and then came the new notes which included the Rs 2000 note.
How many 2000 rupee notes printed in three years
According to RTI, no new notes of Rs 2,000 were printed during the years 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22. RBI Note Mudran (P) Limited printed 3,5429.91 crore notes of Rs 2,000 in the financial year 2016-17. After this, very less 1115.07 crore notes (2000 rupee note) were printed in 2017-18 and in 2018-19 it was further reduced to only 466.90 crore notes.
Sharp rise in the number of counterfeit notes
According to NCRB data, the number of counterfeit notes of Rs 2,000 seized in the country has increased from 2,272 to 2,44,834 between 2016 and 2020. According to the data, in the year 2016, the total number of fake Rs 2,000 notes seized in the country was 2,272. This increased to 74,898 in the year 2017. After this, it came down to 54,776 in the year 2018. In the year 2019, this figure was 90,566 and in the year 2020, 2,44,834 notes.
More than 90 percent counterfeit notes are of low quality
RBI had issued banknotes in all denominations in the Mahatma Gandhi Series – 2005 with a new numbering pattern in 2015. With the Visible Security feature, the general public can easily distinguish the fake currency from the original. More than 90 percent of counterfeit notes (two thousand rupees notes) found in the banking system were of low quality and no major security features were compromised. The RTI states that the RBI issues different instructions to banks on measures to prevent counterfeit notes. The central bank regularly conducts training programs on detecting counterfeit notes for employees/officers of banks and other organizations handling large amounts of cash.
