You must have heard stories of train theft only in stories, but a group of thieves in Bihar has proved it to be true. A group of unidentified people dug a tunnel at the Garhara railway yard in Bihar’s Begusarai district and stole a complete diesel engine of a train, police said on Friday. Let us tell you that the engine was kept in the yard for repairs.
Muzaffarpur’s Railway Protection Force (RPF) Inspector PS Dubey said three people were arrested after a case of theft of a diesel engine brought for repair at Garhara yard was registered at Barauni police station last week. During interrogation, the three arrested persons revealed that they dug a tunnel till the railway yard, through which they took engine parts and other material in gunny bags.
The arrested people also mentioned the owner of the scrap warehouse during interrogation. Acting on a tip-off, a search was conducted at a scrap warehouse in Prabhat Nagar area of Muzaffarpur district, from where the police recovered 13 gunny bags containing equipment used in trains. Dubey said the recovered items include engine parts, old train engine wheels and railway parts made of heavy iron.
The police have started searching for the owner of the junk godown. According to the police, the gang is also involved in breaking steel bridges and stealing their parts.
Last year, a railway engineer from the Samastipur loco diesel shed was suspended after he allegedly sold an old steam engine kept in the Purnia Court premises. The engineer allegedly used a forged letter from the Divisional Mechanical Engineer, Samastipur, to sell the engine in connivance with other railway officials and security personnel.
