Significantly, under the 182-member Gujarat Assembly elections, voting is to be held in two phases on December 1 and 5 and the counting of votes will take place on December 8. The state is expected to witness a triangular contest this time between the BJP, the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). In the 2017 assembly elections, the BJP had won 99 seats, while the Congress had won 77. The BJP had won most of the urban areas, while the Congress fared better in the rural areas.

It may be noted that Gujarat has been considered a stronghold of the BJP for a long time. The BJP has been in power in Gujarat continuously since 1995. The elections assume significance as the BJP seeks to retain power in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, while the Congress hopes to win the assembly elections after being out of power in the state for the past 27 years. At the same time, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been trying to consolidate its ground here for the last few years.

AAP, which fielded its candidates on 29 seats in the 2017 elections, could not even open its account then. This time, AAP is gearing up to contest all the seats in the hope of ousting the BJP from power.
