Taiwan’s president resigns as party chief after strong defeat in local elections

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has resigned from the post of its chairman on Saturday following the poor performance of her party Democratic People’s Party (DPP) in local elections.

In these elections, the opposition party Kuomintang (KMT) has done well and has won many main cities including the capital Taipei.

The whole world was eyeing these elections being held in Taiwan. China and America have been face to face in recent times regarding Taiwan and this island has been the center of discussion in global politics.

In view of the increasing tension between China and Taiwan, President Sai Ing Wen gave the slogan ‘Vote for democracy’ in this election.

Talking to the media after the results came on Saturday, Sai said, “Election results are not what we expected. I take responsibility for this result and resign from the post of DPP President with immediate effect.”

Domestic issues focused on local council and city mayor elections, with issues such as crime, housing and social welfare central. These elections were not directly related to China or foreign policies in any way, but the DPP had appealed to the people to vote thinking about the country’s democracy.
