Government returns 19 names to collegium after Supreme Court question, rejects ten again
The government has returned 19 of the 21 pending recommendations by the Supreme Court collegium for appointment of high court judges amid a standoff between the government and the judiciary over the appointment of judges.
The recommendations were returned hours before the Supreme Court’s hearing on judicial appointments on November 28, The Indian Express has learnt. These include 10 names that were reiterated by the Collegium and 9 names pending after the first recommendation. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said in a tweet on Tuesday that two of the recommendations have been accepted.
These recommendations are for the appointment of advocates Santosh Govind Chapalgaonkar and Milind Manohar Sathaye as judges of the Bombay High Court. The Collegium recommended their names on 12 September 2022.
