FIFA World Cup: Poland in pre-quarterfinals after losing to Lionel Messi’s Argentina, Mexico out after winning against Saudi Arabia
Argentina defeated Poland 2-0 in the last match of Group C in the FIFA World Cup 2022 on Thursday. With this win, Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, made it to the Pre-Quarter Finals of the tournament. Poland managed to reach the last-16 even after losing the match.
In another Group C match, Mexico lost even after winning. In fact, Mexico beat Saudi Arabia 2–1 in their last match of the group stage, but missed out on a place in the pre-quarterfinals due to goal difference.
Henry Martin and Luis Chaves both scored to keep Mexico’s World Cup campaign alive, but Argentina’s 2–0 victory over Poland cost Mexico a 2–1 victory over Saudi Arabia. Wasn’t enough. Mexico failed to get past the group stage for the first time since 1978. Mexico had reached the pre-quarterfinals in the last seven World Cups.
Earlier in Group D, France suffered nine changes in their starting XI in Doha. France had to face a 0-1 defeat against Tunisia. However, despite the victory, the African team Tunisia was eliminated from the tournament. Defending champions France have already made it to the knockouts. Australia defeated Denmark 1-0 in another Group D match to enter the last 16.
This is only the third win in the World Cup for Tunisia, playing in the World Cup for the sixth time, and during this time the team could never make it to the knockout stage. He recorded his first win against Mexico in 1978 and the second against Panama in Russia four years ago. This was only Australia’s fourth win in 19 World Cup matches, but thanks to this the team was able to enter the knockouts for the second time after 2006.
