The visit of the Minister of State for Defense is also considered very special because the border with China is only 90 kilometers away from here. Along with this, there is also an army brigade which monitors the Line of Actual Control. An ITBP battalion is also stationed in Joshimath. The army and ITBP together monitor Auli and all the border lines in the vicinity. Last year itself, the Indian Army had conducted a major war exercise with the American Army in Tapovan, for which China had protested.
Landslide has created a crisis on the existence of Joshimath, the town closest to the China border in Chamoli district. Due to the cracks coming in the buildings, shops, roads etc., everyone’s day and night are being spent in the shadow of fear. From children to the elderly, a sense of fear can be seen on every face. At the same time, on the instructions of the district administration, the people of the residential areas have vacated their houses. A lot of people are still packing up. These people are preparing to leave Joshimath. Due to the landslide in Joshimath, till now more than a hundred houses have developed cracks. Not only this, even the road has been torn up at many places. There is continuous leakage of water from under the ground.
