Uttarakhand: After Joshimath, cracks appeared in houses in Chamoli and Rishikesh as well
After Joshimath in Uttarakhand, there is an atmosphere of panic in Chamoli and Rishikesh as well. People of more than 600 houses are being shifted in Joshimath. The government is continuously engaged in rescue work and is talking about giving relief to the people. Meanwhile, situation like Joshimath has also developed in Karnprayag of Chamoli. Cracks have appeared in more than 2 dozen houses in Bahuguna Colony of Karnprayag, 75 km from Joshimath. The first cracks in these houses of Bahuguna Colony appeared about a decade back, but now these cracks have become wider and longer. The residents there say that since about 2013, landslides and cracks are coming in the house.
Violation of rules in construction work also caused landslide – BP Sati, a resident of Karnprayag, told the media that the landslide happened due to the construction of Mandi and the all-weather road. He told that just two days ago the protest was held, after which the government-administration did the survey but did not take any action. The condition of the house is very pathetic. BP Sati’s wife says that lakhs of rupees have been spent and where to spend how much. CM Dhami is requested to save us. Cracks are also appearing in the houses in Chamoli and Rishikesh. Apart from Karnprayag, the people of Landor are also scared. At least 50 houses in Bahuguna Nagar of Karnprayag, about 75 km from Joshimath, have been showing cracks since 2015. The local people attribute these cracks to the gradual subsidence of the land. For this, the violation of rules in the widening construction works of the National Highway is also considered responsible. People say that the erosion caused by the Pindar river and the haphazard removal of rain water is the reason for all this.
Karnprayag Erosion occurs at the confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar rivers – Former chairman of Karnprayag Municipal Council Subhash Gairola said that the debris from the landslide above Bahuguna Nagar had first damaged the houses in 2015. After this, the city council made efforts for rescue work. The same situation started happening in the past years with the widening of the National Highway and the flow of rain water in the absence of a drain along the Karnprayag-Kanakhul road. Garola said that due to Karnaprayag being situated at the confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar rivers, there is regular and heavy soil erosion during monsoon. He said that during the monsoon, water enters the houses as well, due to which the foundation of the houses becomes weak.
