Thousands of people in Israel have taken to the streets against PM Benjamin Netanyahu. They are opposing the government’s attempts to weaken the Supreme Court. Actually, the Israeli government has issued a resolution regarding the Supreme Court. If this proposal is passed, Israel’s parliament will get the right to overturn the decisions of the Supreme Court. Whoever has the majority in the Parliament will be able to reverse the decision of the Supreme Court.

People believe that this will weaken the country’s democracy and the Supreme Court. Corruption will increase and the rights of minorities will decrease, so they are gathering and registering their protest. They are comparing PM Benjamin Netanyahu with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Israel’s Supreme Court Chief Justice Esther Hayat, the main opposition leader and Attorney General have also opposed the government’s plan.

80 thousand people took to the streets
Despite heavy rain on Saturday night, more than 80,000 people protested against the government in Tel Aviv’s Habima Square. People took to the streets outside the PM’s residence in Jerusalem and also in Hafia. People raised slogans like ‘Criminal Government’ and ‘The End of Democracy’ against the government. There was also a clash between the protesters and the police at one place in Tel Aviv.

Government will interfere in the appointment of judges
If this proposal is passed, most of the members in the committee to select the judges will be from the ruling party. This will increase the interference of the government in the appointment of judges and the independence of legal advisors will also be affected. The fear of Supreme Court will end from the mind of the government.

Critics say that after the implementation of this plan, the government can end the ongoing cases against Benjamin Netanyahu. Benjamin is facing trial on charges of bribery, cheating and breach of trust.
