Hockey World Cup 2023: India-England match ends in draw, both teams yearn to score goals

The match between India and England in the Hockey World Cup 2023 ended in a 0-0 draw. In this match held at Rourkela’s Birsa Munda Stadium, both the teams got many penalty corners but no goal could be scored. Even in the last minute of the game, England got a penalty corner but defender Surinder Kumar broke the hopes of the English team by defending brilliantly. Last year in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, both the teams played a 4-4 draw.

India beat Spain 2-0 and England beat Wales 5-0 in the first match. The Indian team will now face Wales in their next match on 19 January. In terms of goal average, England is currently ahead of India by three goals. In such a situation, India will have to register a big win in their last group match to make it directly to the quarterfinals.

Spain beat Wales

In this World Cup, the top team from each group will directly advance to the quarter-finals and there will be crossover matches between the second and third placed teams. The Indian team has been placed in Group D along with Spain, England and Wales. In another Group D match, Spain beat Wales 5-1. For Spain, Reyna scored field goals in the 16th and 38th minutes, while Miralles scored in the 32nd and 56th minutes. Captain Alvaro Iglesias (22nd minute) also scored a goal for Spain. James Carson scored the only goal for Wales in the 52nd minute.

India has won the Hockey World Cup title only once so far. In the year 1975, under the captaincy of Ajitpal Singh, Team India got the title success. Apart from this, the Indian team was successful in winning bronze in the 1971 World Cup and silver in the 1973 tournament. Now the fans are hopeful that this time India will be able to end the drought of 48 years.
