All England Championships: Lakshya Sen loses, defeating former world number one pair Trisha-Gayathri in last-16

Indian young badminton player Lakshya Sen crashed out of the All England Championships after losing in the last-16 of the men’s singles. Sen, last year’s runner-up, did not look in his best form and lost in straight games to Andres Antonsen 13-21, 15-21 in 52 minutes.

A defeat in the last-16 will cost Sen ranking points. Former world No. 6 Sen had also made a first round exit at the German Open. Meanwhile, men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, returning from injury, lost 21-10, 17-21, 19-21 to world No. 10 Liang Wei Kang and Wang Chang of China. Indian players Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand continued their stellar run at the All England Badminton Championships, advancing to the quarterfinals for the second time in a row. In 2022, the pair of Trisha and Gayatri reached the semi-finals. In women’s doubles, the Indian pair defeated world number one pair of Japan’s Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota in straight games.

Earlier, Trisha and Gayatri had defeated world number eight pair of Jongkolphan and Ravinda 21-18, 21-14 in the first round. The Indian pair likes to play in All England. Last year too, the pair reached the semi-finals where they lost to China’s Zhang and Zhen Yu.

19-year-old Trisha and 20-year-old Gayatri won the match 21-14, 24-11 against the former champion pair in just 50 minutes. This is one of the biggest wins of the Indian pair’s career. Fukushima and Hirata have also been silver medalists of the World Championships. This is Trisha and Gayathri’s third win against a top-10 pairing in less than a month.
