Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sentenced to 2 years, Surat court verdict in defamation case

The Surat District Court on Thursday convicted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for commenting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surname. Surat court has sentenced Rahul Gandhi to 2 years imprisonment. Rahul’s bail plea is also being heard now.

This case pertains to 2019 when Lok Sabha member from Wayanad, Rahul Gandhi had commented on PM Modi’s surname in a public meeting held in Kolar, Karnataka before the general elections. After which a defamation case was registered against him. Rahul had allegedly said, ‘Why do all thieves have the same surname Modi?’ A petition was filed by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi against this remark of Rahul.

‘My intention was not wrong’
According to experts, Rahul Gandhi’s membership has become a threat due to his conviction. Although Rahul Gandhi said in the court, ‘My intention was not wrong. No one was harmed by my statement. On the other hand, Ashwini Choubey told that, ‘Rahul Gandhi is in the dock of the court, he is also in the dock of democracy. Can’t even muster the courage to come to this temple and apologize.

The case is registered in these sections
Let us tell that a crime was registered against Rahul Gandhi under section 499, 500 of IPC. In this case, he has appeared in the court for the third time today. The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma had last week heard the arguments of both the sides and fixed March 23 as the date for pronouncement of the verdict. After the hearing today, the court has declared Rahul Gandhi guilty.
