ED action against BBC India in foreign funding case, case registered under FEMA

News broadcaster BBC India’s troubles seem to be increasing. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken action against BBC India in the foreign funding case. ED has registered against BBC India under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Recording of statements also sought

The news agency has given this information by quoting official sources. Sources said the probe agency has also sought documents and recording of statements from some BBC officials under the provisions of FEMA. The ED is also probing alleged Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) violations by the company.

Income Tax Department had searched

The Income Tax Department also conducted searches at the Delhi and Mumbai offices of BBC this year. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and Income Tax authorities had said that the income and profits shown by various entities of the BBC Group were not commensurate with the scale of their operations in India. The officials also said that the tax was not paid by BBC India.

It may be noted that a few months ago, BBC was embroiled in controversy regarding the documentary on Gujarat riots. The central government had banned the screening of the documentary. The Ministry of External Affairs had said that it is inspired and misleading by the colonial mindset. At the same time, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had issued a directive to block all YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing the link of the documentary.
