Uttarakhand: Revised Zamindari Destruction and Land System Act came into force, half the population got half the rights in ancestral property

The work of making half of the population of Uttarakhand co-accountants in the ancestral property has started. The Uttarakhand (Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land System Act, 1950) Amendment 2021 has been implemented across the state.

This amendment bill was passed during the Gairsain assembly session in the previous Trivendra government. After the issue of its notification, it has come into force across the state. Under this, women are being made co-accountants in ancestral property.

For the purpose of making women self-reliant, the government brought the right of co-accountant in ancestral property. It has been said that due to the hilly region of Uttarakhand, industrial activities are limited here. Most of the men of the state are working in other states for government service or employment in private institutions. While women mostly live here. In such a situation, due to the rights of men in land and property, the participation of women in the activities of economic development was not being ensured.

She was also not able to take loans from banks to set up self-employment or enterprise. With the aim of making women self-reliant, they have been given the right of co-tenant in ancestral property. Now she can set up her own enterprise by taking loan on that ancestral property.

According to this law, a male landowner, who is a landowner with transferable rights, during his life time, his wife’s name will be recorded as a co-tenant in the husband’s share. This provision has been made applicable only to the ancestral property of the male transferable landowner. On re-marriage after divorce, the woman will not be a co-accountant in the share of the former husband.
