The ‘National Accountability (Amendment) Bill, 2023’ was passed by the Parliament earlier this month and sent to President Alvi for his assent. The Bill not only empowers the head of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to transfer corruption cases involving allegations of less than Rs 50 crore to the concerned agency, authority or department, but also to close pending inquiries and investigations Is. In a tweet, the President’s Office said, “The President has returned the Bill to Parliament under Article 75 of the Constitution (President’s assent to Bills).” It added that the President said that the matter of the previous amendment to the NAB law is already pending in the Supreme Court and that any change in the accountability laws should be reviewed once again without reviewing the implications of a pending case. The government last year passed the National Accountability (Second Amendment) Act 2022 to restrict NAB’s role in corruption cases above Rs 50 crore and take away the President’s power to appoint accountability court judges. Alvi had refused to sign the bill and it became law after a joint session of Parliament cleared it on June 10 last year.
