Not only DK Shivkumar and Siddharamiah, MB Patil and Ji are also interested in becoming Chief Minister. There will be one chief minister and decide it will be the party and MLA.
Who are the strong contenders for the post of CM?
There is a tough fight for the CM’s post between former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar. Besides Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar, the names of former deputy chief minister and former KPCC president G Parameshwara, veteran leader and seven-time MP KH Muniyappa (both Dalits) and MB Patil are doing the rounds.
Earlier in the day, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and eight-time MLA Siddaramaiah met. Priyank Kharge said that the meeting between Mallikarjun Kharge and Siddaramaiah was a courtesy meeting, not a political one. He said that the final decision on the CM candidate would be taken in the Congress Legislature Party meeting. Let us tell you that both Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar put up a united front during the election campaign phase and ensured that no rift came out in the open under the advice of Mallikarjun Kharge.
Siddaramaiah Vs DKS
If Siddaramaiah is elected as the CLP leader, it will be his second term as chief minister. Shivakumar had served as a minister in Siddaramaiah’s cabinet, while the 60-year-old Shivakumar, considered a troubleshooter for the Congress party, has appeal in Karnataka.
In fact this election, the Congress has significantly improved its electoral performance in the Vokkaliga dominated old Mysore region (South Karnataka) and the credit goes largely to Shivakumar.
Siddaramaiah is known for capable administrative skills and has the experience of running a successful tenure as Chief Minister. He also has the distinction of presenting 13 budgets for the state.
Being a mass leader, he enjoys considerable influence among Ahinda (Kannada abbreviation for Minorities, Backward Classes and Dalits). Siddaramaiah’s 75th birthday celebrations held in Davanagere last year were largely seen as an attempt by him and his loyalists to project him as a future chief minister.
