In Motihari, Bihar, a dowry greedy bridegroom was kept hostage by the villagers for hours. After this, when he returned all the dowry taken in the marriage, the girl’s parents left him. The girl’s men then took the bridegroom hostage and released him when he took back the cash, jewelry and all the items taken in dowry. The expenses incurred in marriage also had to be paid by the boy’s side. After this the boy had to return to Barang with the procession. The case pertains to Belwanwa locality of Motihari’s city police station area. Here on Saturday, the marriage of Rohit Kumar, son of Rajesh Mahato of Patkhaulia village, was going to happen in Belvanwa Mohalla of Nagar police station area.

Demand for gold chain and bed before Sindoordan

The marriage procession reached there for the wedding. After singing and dancing, the ceremony of garlanding was completed. Then the baraatis were made to drink food. After this the marriage rituals were being done. Everything was going fine. But after taking rounds, the boy refused to donate vermilion further. The boy demanded a gold chain and bed before donating vermilion and refused to marry if the demand was not met. During this, the girl’s people said that they have already given five lakh rupees. Apart from the expenses that were spent in the marriage, now from where can they fulfill the demand of gold chain and bed.

Money spent on marriage, dowry returned, everyone left

Even after repeated persuasions from the girl’s side, the boy remained adamant and left the mandap. After this there was a dispute between both the parties, then the girl’s side took the boy, his brother-in-law, brother and father hostage. It is being told that during this time a lot of care was also taken for the boys there. After this, the girls called a panchayat on Sunday. The Panchayat decided to return the money taken in dowry and the money spent in welcoming the procession. After this the boys returned five lakh rupees, then everyone was released. Earlier, after taking two rounds in Sitamandhi, the girl refused to marry. Actually the girl did not like the color of the boy.
