USA: America can expel lakhs of youth of Indian origin from the country! Know who are these ‘documented dreamers’
The future of 2.5 lakh documented Dreamers in America is in jeopardy and they are at risk of being deported from America. Most of these documented Dreamers are children of Indian origin. These people are demanding the US Parliament to pass the Children’s Act soon. Let us inform that the Children’s Act is pending in the US Parliament since 2021, if this law is passed, then these 2.5 lakh youth will not have to leave America under the current rule and they will be able to apply for citizenship by staying in America.
Who are Documented Dreamers
Every year a large number of people from all over the world move to America to fulfill their dreams. A large number of these people work in the US on non-immigrant visas or long-term visas. The children of these people are called ‘documented dreamers’ in America. Actually, these children can live and get education in America with full legal rights till the age of 21 years. If these children or their parents get US citizenship before they are 21 years old, otherwise these children have to leave America.
This is the reason why these youths are demanding the US government to pass the Children’s Act of America as soon as possible so that they can get relief. Deep Patel, founder of the Improve the Dream organization and of Indian origin, said that ‘the time has come to pass the Children’s Act of America and end this problem forever’. Deep said that out of these 2.5 lakh documented Dreamers, 90 percent are studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
Fear of youth leaving their home
Deep Patel’s parents came to the US nearly two decades ago and are working here on long-term visas. Deep fears that he will be forcibly removed from the US if the Children’s Act is not passed by the time he turns 21, or if his parents are not granted US citizenship. Muhil Ravichandran, like Deep, is also a documented dreamer and is worried about his future. Muhill said her parents have applied for US citizenship, but given the current backlog for green cards, she fears she will exceed the 21-year deadline. Muhil said she lives every day with the fear that she may have to leave her family, friends and home.
Deep Patel told that four years ago the son of a dairy farmer was also deported from America for being 21 years old, whereas he had spent 19 years in this country. Similarly, two years ago a nursing graduate had to leave the US for the same reason. Deep told that if the Children Act is not passed this year also, 10,000 youths can be deported from America.
What is America’s Children’s Act
In the year 2021, US MPs Deborah Ross, Marinette Miller, Raja Krishnamurthy and Young Kim introduced the Children’s Act in the US Parliament. There are provisions under this act that children whose parents are working in America on long-term visa and those children have been living legally in America for the last 10 years. Also, if he is a graduate from any higher educational institution, he will be entitled to get US citizenship.
Also, there is a provision in this Children’s Act that when these Documented Dreamers apply for US citizenship, their age should be calculated from the date they applied and not from the date they got citizenship. In this way, if these youth apply for citizenship before turning 21, then they will not be at risk of being deported when they turn 21.
Youth who have crossed the age of 16 years and have applied for green card should get employment authorization.
