French Open: Djokovic said on the hope of winning the 23rd Grand Slam title, very happy and inspiring
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, who is chasing a historic and record 23rd Grand Slam trophy at the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year, has said that it is very happy and motivating for him.
If the Serbian wins in Paris, he will move one step ahead of Spain’s Rafael Nadal to win a record 23rd Grand Slam trophy.
It’s no secret that one of the main reasons I play and compete in professional tennis today is to try to break more records and make more history in tennis, Djokovic said at his pre-tournament press conference.
It is very motivating and inspiring for me.
Third seed Djokovic comes in with a 5-3 record on clay this season. The 36-year-old suffered a third-round exit in Monte-Carlo before losing against Holger Roon at the quarter-final stage in Rome. He also missed Madrid due to injury.
Despite his recent setbacks, two-time champion Djokovic is confident he can be at his best in the French capital.
“I don’t have any physical problems that worry me,” Djokovic said. That’s why it’s most important to me. I want to come into the Grand Slam feeling good. I know how to reach Grand Slam. I know how to live during these few weeks. I hope I have a few weeks.
The 36-year-old shares the same half with top 5 stars Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Nadal is an opponent the Serbian will not face. Last week, the 14-time Roland Garros champion pulled out of the French Open due to injury.
The World No. 3 shared his thoughts on Nadal’s absence and the title contenders. Djokovic said, obviously Nadal not playing in the tournament here is a big loss for tennis. This is a big loss for Roland Garros, as he is by far the most successful player in this tournament in history.
The tournament in Nadal’s absence certainly opens up, you know, a chance and an opportunity for the rest of us to try to get a title, because whenever he plays he’s here or at any clay court tournament. A complete contender for
That said, you have Alcaraz, he is No. 1 and probably the biggest favorite in the tournament. Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev, they have started to play great on clay courts. And Roon, (Casper) Ruud and (Alexander) Zverev, know how to play in big events, and can always be at a disadvantage against anyone.
Djokovic may face Spain’s Alcaraz in the semi-finals. Alcaraz won his last Tour-level encounter in Madrid last year. Djokovic praised the 20-year-old Alcaraz and his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero.
That said, along with Alcaraz, you have Juan Carlos Ferrero who is a former world No. 1. Someone who always has a reputation for being very serious, very disciplined and goes about his business in a proper way. I think he’s been with Alcaraz since he was 14 or 15 which was a great decision for Alcaraz. With someone to mentor and guide you and introduce you to professional tennis. It is clearly doing a great job.
Djokovic will start his campaign against Alexander Kovacevic of America.
