Wrestlers Protest: Will suspend Indian Wrestling Federation, United World Wrestling’s scathing comment in support of wrestlers

Wrestlers continue to protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Protesting wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik reached Haridwar on the pretext of their medals, but were stopped by farmer leader Naresh Tikait. Meanwhile, United World Wrestling (UWW), the world’s apex body of wrestlers, on Tuesday (May 30) condemned the treatment of the players and the detention of wrestlers on Sunday (May 28).

United World Wrestling, demanding an impartial inquiry against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, said that the protesters will hold a meeting with the players regarding their condition and their safety. UWW further said that if the elections are not held in 45 days, then the Wrestling Federation of India will have to be suspended.

Wrestlers were taken into custody

Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia were forced into a bus by the Delhi Police at Jantar Mantar when wrestlers and their supporters tried to break through the security cordon and move towards the new Parliament House for the Mahila Mahapanchayat on Sunday.

Wrestlers were not allowed to proceed towards the new Parliament House. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to inaugurate it on the same day and when the police stopped the wrestlers and their supporters, there was a scuffle between them.

What did United World Wrestling say?

United World Wrestling President Nenad Lolovik wrote a letter last week asking who is running the WFI? He had sent a copy of this to Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha and officials.

What is the matter?

Accusing wrestler Brij Bhushan Singh of sexual harassment and threats, he has been demonstrating against him for several days. The Delhi Police has registered two FIRs including one under the POCSO Act against Singh regarding the case. The players are demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan Singh.
