Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea, which earlier seemed to be heading towards the coast of Pakistan, has now changed its course. Biparjoy, which has turned into a severe storm, is now seen moving in the north- northeast direction. The Meteorological Department has said in the latest bulletin that it may hit the northern Gujarat coast on June 15.
A bulletin from the IMD’s Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) said the severe cyclone would cause storm surge of 2-3 meters high in the Arabian Sea off the Gujarat coast. Apart from this, there is a possibility of large scale damage due to the storm. The bulletin said that due to the storm, conditions of severe rains and floods can arise in the western coastal districts of Gujarat and damage to kutcha- pucca houses. Apart from this, the destruction of thatched houses, standing crops. Damage to roads and roads, extensive damage to plantations and orchards are expected. The IMD has said that the storm is likely to disrupt railway service and power supply.
According to the Meteorological Department, Biparjoy which has already intensified into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” was located about 540 km west of Mumbai on Sunday evening. It is the second highest category storm in terms of strength. Earlier it was expected that the severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ would hit around Karachi, Pakistan. Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey told reporters that Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a meeting with district magistrates of coastal districts, representatives of the Army, Navy and Indian Coast Guard and officials of various departments. Pandey said officials of various departments have been instructed to prepare well in advance and coordinate to minimize the impact of the cyclone in the coastal districts.
He said that to deal with its impact, the Gujarat government is deploying several teams of NDRF and SDRF in the coastal areas. The IMD has issued a warning of heavy rain on June 14 and 15 in Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagadh and Mori districts. The IMD said in the bulletin that heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at a few places on June 14 and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over the affected districts on June 15.
