Italy: Fierce fire in Milan’s old age home, six people killed, dozens injured

At least six people were killed and dozens more injured in a fire at a retirement home in Milan, Italy, early Friday. Foreign media gave this information quoting Italian officials. The injured have been admitted to hospital. Officials said the actual number could be much higher.

According to firefighters, the blaze started at about 1:20 a.m. (local time) in a room on the first floor of the ‘Casa dei Coniugi’ old age home in the southern residential area of ​​Milan. Fire officials said the cause of the fire is being investigated. Dozens of people were safely evacuated from the building, he added.

According to media reports, the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, said that the fire has been brought under control in a room of the building, where two people died due to the flames. The mayor said the fire was quickly doused, but other victims died of smoke suffocation. It is a huge loss, he said in a television interview. It could have been much worse.

Citing Gianluca Chiodini, the head of Lombardy’s emergency service, media reported that at least 80 people were taken to hospital, two of them in serious condition. In addition, 14 had serious but non-life-threatening injuries and about 65 had minor injuries.
