Uttarakhand’s Boy, Lakshya Sen did wonders in Canada Open, created a ruckus by defeating Chinese player in the title match, CM Dhami congratulated Sen
Star badminton player Lakshya Sen won the men’s singles event title at the Canada Open. In the match played in Calgary (Canada), Lakshya defeated China’s Li Shi Feng 21-18, 22-20. This was the BWF (World Badminton Federation) Super 500 title of Lakshya Sen. The 21-year-old Lakshya won his first Super 500 title at the 2022 India Open.
Only second Indian to do so
After this victory, Sen told news agency PTI, ‘It was difficult in the Olympic qualification year because things did not suit me. So this win will boost my confidence a lot. I had to give my all in some matches. The conditions here were different and it was important to get used to it. Lakshya is only the second Indian male player to win the title of Canada Open. Earlier in the year 2016, B. Sai Praneeth won this prestigious tournament. This was Lakshya Sen’s first title after winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in August last year. He is the second player in the country to become champion in the singles event of badminton this year. Earlier in May, HS Prannoy had won the Malaysia Masters. Sen showed his strong spirit in the final match by saving four game points in the second game to win the championship point.

Sen defeats Shi Feng for the seventh time
He scored a championship point with a powerful smash and then lay down on the court celebrating the victory. Sen said, ‘It has been an amazing week for me. As the game progressed, I got better, I got used to the conditions and my strategy worked yesterday and today (semi-final and final). I am happy with my performance.
Both players played some extraordinary rallies of high speed from both sides of the net in this match, but in the end, Sen was overpowered against China. This was the 12th meeting between the two players in which Sen was successful seven times. This victory was very important for Sen’s confidence. He slipped to No. 19 in the rankings after struggling to find his form at the start of the season.
Who is 21 year old Lakshya Sen?
Born in Almora, Uttarakhand, Lakshya inherited badminton. His grandfather CL Sen is called Bhishma Pitamah of Badminton in Almora. Lakshya’s father DK Sen has played badminton at the national level and is also a national level coach. Lakshya Sen’s brother Chirag Sen also represents India in Badminton at the international level.
DK Sen had left Almora and settled in Bangalore to give good badminton training to his son. In Bangalore, Lakshya Sen joined the Prakash Padukone Academy, where he surprised Prakash Padukone with his talent during the trials. At the senior level, Lakshya Sen got the biggest success in the 2021 World Championship.
Lakshya won the bronze medal in that tournament held in Huelva. Apart from Lakshya among Indian male players, only Prakash Padukone and Kidambi Srikanth have been successful in winning medals in the World Championship. Then he won the title of India Open. In the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, Lakshya also won the gold medal in men’s singles.
