After leaving the house, people often put their mobile phones on charging at public places. However, it is important that you are careful when using public charging stations. Actually, these days some scammers are making people their victims through ‘juice jacking’ scam. RBI has also issued an alert regarding this scam. According to an RBI booklet on financial frauds in the financial sector, the juice jacking scam is a scam. Through this, cyber criminals steal important data from your mobile, which can cause financial loss to you.
What is juice jacking scam?
Juice jacking scam is one such method in which cyber criminals adopt measures to steal important data from devices like mobiles and laptops. To handle this type of scam, cyber criminals are installing malware-laden software or hardware on public charging stations. These cybercriminals make people their victims through public charging stations, such as USB ports or charging kiosks.
You should note that the charging port of the mobile can also be used for file/data transfer. Cyber miscreants use public charging ports to transfer malware to phones connected there and gain control or steal data sensitive information such as emails, SMS, saved passwords, etc. from a person’s mobile phone.
How to save
To avoid juice jacking, avoid using public charging stations. If you are forced to use a public charging station, make sure to check the USB cable carefully before charging your device. If you notice anything unusual, don’t use the USB cable.
You can also take some other measures to avoid juice jacking, such as:
- Password protect your device.
- Keep your device up to date with antivirus software.
- Use the fingerprint scanner or Face ID to protect your device from unauthorized use.
- Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks.
