Inherited politics

Pro. Mansoor has inherited politics. His grandfather Abdul Khaliq was originally a resident of Meerut. He came to Aligarh to study at the Mohammedan Oriental (MAO) College before it became AMU. After taking a law degree, he became a teacher in the law department itself. At that time there was also a provision to do job along with advocacy. Abdul Majeed Khwaja, who was close to Mahatma Gandhi in the law department, had left the post of teacher. He got the job on the same vacant post. After retirement, Abdul Khaliq became interested in politics, then in 1931 he contested and won the election for the post of President of Aligarh Municipality. Son Hafeez ur Rehman was also Dean of Law Department of AMU.

Brother also remained Vice Chancellor

Abdul Khaliq built a Kothi named Hafiz Manzil on Maris Road in the name of his son Hafiz ur Rehman. Pro. Tariq Mansoor is the youngest of his four brothers. His elder brother Prof. Rashid ur Rehman was the Vice Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard University. He was also a professor in Saudi Arabia. He died in a road accident in Saudi Arabia. Mo. Farooq and Khalid are also his brothers. Pro. Tariq Mansoor did his schooling from Our Lady Fatima, Ramghat Road. After this, he did MBBS from JN Medical College of AMU. Surgery MS. In 1982, he got selected in the Department of Surgery. In 1988-99, Tariq Mansoor’s name was also included in the contenders for the post of Municipality President, although he could not contest the elections. SP leader Zafar Alam contested the election.

Journey to become Vice Chancellor

Pro. Tariq Mansoor was the Chairman, Dean and Principal of the Department of Surgery of JN Medical College. Has been the Secretary of the Games Committee from 2013 to 2017. It was only during his tenure as the Principal of the Medical College that his name came up in the discussions for the post of Vice-Chancellor. Former Vice-Chancellor Zameer Uddin Shah started the process of selection of the new Vice-Chancellor while being the Vice-Chancellor. Then a panel of five names was made in the Executive Council. Tariq Mansoor’s name was also included in these. These five names were sent to the University Court. From there three names including Tariq Mansoor were sent to the President i.e. the Visitor of the University after making a panel. Visitor Prof. Stamped the name of Tariq Mansoor. Tariq Mansoor thus took charge as the 24th Vice-Chancellor of AAMU on 17 May 2017. His tenure was to end on 17 May 2022. But the President (Visitor) granted an extension of one year. The tenure of the Vice-Chancellor was to end on May 17, 2023, but before that the Governor nominated him as MLC. Due to this, he resigned from the post of Vice Chancellor on April 2, 2023.

Good relations with BJP

During his stay as Vice Chancellor, Tariq Mansoor kept on making relations with senior leaders of RSS and BJP. He used to attend big events of RSS.

Relations with RSS leaders were also considered behind the appointment of MLC. The result of this was that PM Narendra Modi addressed the centenary year celebrations of AMU virtually. In 2022, his son’s reception was attended by many BJP leaders including RSS National Sah Sarkaryavah Dr. Krishna Gopal, senior campaigners Indresh Kumar and Sunil Ambekar.

Then Tariq Mansoor was also completing five years on the post of Vice Chancellor. The discussion had started in the AMU campus since then that the central government will not allow Tariq Mansoor to leave now. A few days after the ceremony, his service as Vice Chancellor was extended for one year.
