Uttarakhand: Landslide in Gaurikund, search continues for 17 people missing in debris, CM Dhami’s visit to Gaurikund canceled due to bad weather

Rescue has started from 5.30 am to search for 17 people missing in landslide in Gaurikund of Rudraprayag district. Jawans of NDRF, SDRF and other organizations are engaged in the search. District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said that it is raining lightly in the area since morning.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s visit to Gaurikund has been canceled due to bad weather in Rudraprayag. Unfortunately Rudraprayag ranks first among the 10 most landslide prone districts in the country. Proof of this are the major incidents of landslides in the district during the last three-four decades, in which thousands of people were killed or went missing.

Rudraprayag district most prone to landslides in the country

In the landslide and flood in Kedarnath in 2013, 4500 people fell asleep or lost their lives. The Gaurikund landslide incident has confirmed that landslide map report of the National Remote Sensing Center (NRSC) of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

The report, prepared on the basis of satellite images, states that Rudraprayag district is most prone to landslides in the country. Tehri ranks second among the 10 most vulnerable districts in the country in terms of landslide risk.

The matter of concern for the mountain people is that all the 13 districts of Uttarakhand are included in the 147 most landslide-affected districts. Among these, Chamoli district ranks nineteenth in the country in terms of landslide risk. Joshimath town in Chamoli district is already under the threat of landslides.
