Heavy rains continue in Himachal; 452 roads blocked due to landslides, electricity disrupted in many districts

Monsoon is raining heavily in Himachal Pradesh. Widespread rains have been continuing across the state for two days. Due to this, normal life has been affected due to landslides at various places. According to the report of the State Disaster Management Authority, till Sunday morning, two national highways and 452 roads are closed due to landslides across the state. Apart from this, 1814 power transformers and 59 water supply schemes are also stalled. Mandi district has been most affected. 236 roads and 1335 power transformers are closed in this district. 59 roads are blocked in Shimla, 40 in Bilaspur, 39 in Kullu, 28 in Hamirpur and 21 in Solan. In Hamirpur, there is power cut in many villages due to failure of 445 transformers. Due to landslides, vehicular movement has come to a standstill on Mandi-Kullu National Highway-21 in Mandi district and Kalka-Shimla National Highway in Solan district.
Three vehicles buried due to landslide in Shimla city
Due to heavy rainfall overnight in Shimla district, incidents of landslides and collapse of trees were reported at many places. On Sunday morning, three vehicles parked on the roadside in Dudhli, Shimla, were hit by a landslide. However, there were no casualties in this incident. According to the police, three vehicles were buried due to the landslide. They are being removed with the help of JCB and crane.
Here, at around 6.30 am on Sunday morning, the National Highway was blocked for about two and a half hours due to the fall of a cedar tree between Varsha Shalika and Hiranagar on the Shimla-Bilaspur road. Due to this, Shimla was cut off from lower Himachal. However, the administration immediately started the work of removing trees from the road and restored the highway by 9 o’clock.
Similarly, a landslide occurred near Himland in the early morning. Due to which the roads leading to Chhota Shimla and BCS, Kasumpti have been closed. On the road leading to Kent Line, Shimla, the road has been closed due to landslide in the courtyard of CPWD building along with ARO office. At this place two cedar trees are on the verge of falling.
Yellow alert of heavy rain for three days
The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain in the state for the next three days. Yellow alert has been issued for heavy rain in the plains and mid-mountainous areas. The department has also expressed fear of floods in eight districts including Shimla. The weather will remain bad across the state till August 17. Himachal Police has issued an advisory in view of the bad weather and appealed to the people and tourists to take precautions. Tourists have been advised not to go to the banks of rivers and streams and not to travel to landslide-prone areas.
Highest rainfall in Sundernagar and Mandi
The highest rainfall of 166 mm was recorded in Sundernagar till 8:30 am on Sunday. Apart from this, 115 mm rainfall has been recorded in Mandi, 83 in Barthi, 67 in Palampur, 60 in Bilaspur, 50 in Jubbarhatti and 45 mm in Shimla.
87 incidents of landslides and 54 incidents of flood in monsoon season
Monsoon had arrived in Himachal Pradesh on June 24 and so far 87 incidents of landslides and 54 incidents of flood have been reported in the monsoon season. During this period, 255 people have lost their lives and 33 are missing in rain-related accidents. 66 people have died due to landslides and floods. During the monsoon season, 935 houses, 269 shops and 2635 cattle sheds completely collapsed. While 7758 houses suffered partial damage. The government departments of the state have been estimated to have suffered a loss of Rs 6807 crore in the monsoon season. In this, the Public Works Department has suffered the maximum loss of Rs 2200 crore.
