The world’s second largest temple is now ready in 12 years, inaugurated in New Jersey, America
Swaminarayan Akshardham, the world’s second largest Hindu temple outside India, was inaugurated in New Jersey, USA on Sunday 8 October 2023. This temple is built in Robbinsville Township.
The temple is one of the many temples built by Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swainarayan Sanstha, a worldwide religious and civil organization of the Swaminarayan sect. It will be opened for general devotees from October 18.
Akshardham Temple: It took 12 years to build the temple
More than 12,500 volunteers from America worked day and night to build the temple which is 255 feet long, 345 feet wide, 191 feet high and spread over 183 acres. Apart from the main temple, it has 12 sub temples. There are nine peaks and nine pyramidal peaks. It took about twelve years to build such a huge and grand temple.
More than 10 thousand idols in the temple
The temple houses a remarkable collection of over 10,000 sculptures and intricate carvings depicting Indian musical instruments and dance forms. Nearly two million cubic feet of stone, including limestone, granite, pink sandstone and marble, used in the construction of the temple has been sourced from different parts of the world including India, Turkey, Greece, Italy and China.
