More than 2 lakh children were sexually abused in the Spanish Church, people got angry over this action of the priests.
A big revelation has been made about the Roman Catholic Church of Spain. More than 200,000 minors have been sexually abused by Roman Catholic priests in Spain, according to a report published by an independent commission on Friday. This data is from 1940 till now.
No specific figures were given in the report. But it said that in the survey of more than 8,000 adults, 0.6 percent said they were sexually abused by members of the clergy when they were children. This figure is equivalent to about 200,000 of Spain’s adult population of about 39 million.
That percentage rises to 1.13 percent, or more than 400,000 people, when abuses by lay members are included, Spain’s national ombudsman Angel Gabilondo said at a press conference called to present the report’s findings.
Let us tell you that this is the latest revelation of sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church of Spain after the incidents of sexual abuse in churches around the world have been exposed for the last 20 years.
Spain, traditionally a Catholic country, has become highly secular. However, allegations of sexual abuse by priests have now started gaining momentum as victims are continuously accusing the priests.
“Unfortunately, for many years there has been a certain desire to deny abuses or to hide or protect abusers,” said Gabilondo, a former education minister.
The report criticized the Catholic Church’s approach and called on it to respond to child abuse cases involving “inadequate” priests. The report calls for the creation of a state fund to compensate victims.
