According to CNN report, the police of Zhangjiagang (Zhangjiagang, China) were recently tipped off by some animal activists that hundreds of cats were being loaded in trucks and taken to the slaughterhouse. On his tip, the police took action and confiscated the trucks. Activists had found several closed wooden boxes near the cemetery, inside which cats were kept. Animal activists followed those trucks for about 6 days, and when they came to know that cats were being taken to the slaughterhouse in trucks, they immediately informed the police about it.
1000 cats were rescued
The report claims that after killing the cats in abattoirs, their meat was supplied to the southern part of the country, where it was sold as pork or mutton. Police have rescued about 1000 cats. An animal activist said that through this trade, 1 pound of cat meat, i.e. about 450 grams of meat, was being sold for up to Rs 300. After the process, a cat weighs about 4 to 5 pounds.
Cats sent to shelter home
According to CNN, police and animal activists have sent the cats to a nearby shelter. If the plan of killing cats and selling meat had succeeded, the accused could have earned more than Rs 17 lakh. At present, it has not been mentioned in the report whether any arrest has been made in this case or not, nor is it known whether the cats were stray or pets.
