Delhi High Court has convicted Naresh Sharma of criminal contempt for using objectionable language against the judge and demanding death penalty. The High Court bench of Justice Suresh Kait and Justice Shalinder Kor has sentenced Naresh Sharma to six months’ imprisonment. The court has written in the order that after considering the material placed on record, the arguments of the contemnor and the opposition, this court is of the opinion that the contemnor has no remorse for his conduct and actions. Actually, the court asked Naresh Sharma to tender an unconditional apology, but Sharma refused to tender an unconditional apology for his conduct.

6 months jail, 2000 fine

Delhi High Court had sentenced Naresh Sharma to 6 months jail and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 2,000 in the contempt case. The court said in the order that if the fine amount is not paid, one will have to undergo additional imprisonment for 7 days.

What is the whole matter?

Naresh Sharma had filed a petition accusing the Indian government of corruption since independence and demanding an investigation. Naresh Sharma’s petition was rejected by the single bench of the High Court on July 27, 2023. When the petition was rejected, he used objectionable language against the judge. Not only this, they also demanded death penalty for the judge who gave the verdict.

Delhi HC said that as a responsible citizen of the country, the contemnor is expected to put forward his complaints in a civilized manner while maintaining the dignity of the court and the judicial process of law. The court emphasized that even though Sharma filed the petition out of resentment, he had filed a very insulting reply to the show cause notice.
