Shahdol is a tribal dominated district. In such a situation, the evil practice of exorcism and burning with hot rods continues even today. Due to superstition, dozens of cases of branding innocent children with hot rods in the name of treatment have come to light. Out of which 10 innocent people have also died.
If you have pneumonia, you burn it with hot rods
This recent case has come to light from Hardi village of Panchayat Sohagpur area in the district. Here, due to pneumonia and difficulty in breathing, a one and a half month old infant was burnt with hot rods 51 times on his stomach, back, face and hands and legs. Because of this the child’s condition became more serious. When his condition worsened, he was admitted to the hospital where he is undergoing treatment. On this matter, the child’s father told that when the child’s health deteriorated, the elders of the house had him burnt with hot iron.
Burning the body is called Dom
Let us tell you that burning the bodies of children in this way is called Dom in rural-tribal areas. This is a superstition. The villagers believe that if a child has any disease then the disease goes away if he is domed i.e. burnt with hot rods.
