Uttarakhand: Chief Secretary Dr. S. S. Sandhu reviewed the progress of the work being done under solid waste management

Chief Secretary Dr. S. S. Sandhu reviewed the progress of works under solid waste management in the state at the Secretariat on Tuesday. The Chief Secretary said that to achieve the target of 100 percent disposal of solid waste, work should be done towards door to door waste collection, source segregation and dustbin free city.

The Chief Secretary directed to present an ideal plan for developing a world class solid waste management system in the state in the next 15 days. He said that there will be no shortage of budget for this scheme. Said that after working on the plan from various schemes, provision will be made from the state budget for gap funding. The Chief Secretary also directed to immediately remove legacy waste from various places across the state. Said that after removal of legacy waste, land use plan should be prepared as per the local needs and circumstances so that maximum utilization of the vacant land can be done.

The Chief Secretary also directed to make the entire state dustbin free in the next 15 days. Said that 100 percent door to door garbage collection will be possible only then. He said that whatever amount of garbage collection vehicles is required for this, budget will be made available for it. Man power should also be congratulated. He also gave instructions to run the scheme for creating awareness among the people. Said that CCTV cameras should be installed at places where people often throw garbage. People should also be included in the scheme and those who send a photograph of the person throwing garbage should be given a reward of 50 percent of the amount of the challan imposed on the person throwing garbage. This will motivate people to collect garbage door to door. He said that after the removal of dustbins from the roadsides across the state, a modification plan for those vehicles should also be prepared keeping in mind that the vehicles made suitable for lifting dustbins do not become unusable and they continue to be used for work.

The Chief Secretary also directed to speed up the construction of solid waste management plants. Said that the complete plan should be presented including the date of completion of each level of all the plants. He also directed to conduct third party audit of solid waste management. On this occasion, Additional Secretary Nitin Bhadauria and Member Secretary Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board Sushant Patnaik and other officers were present.
