India came out openly in favor of Iran, voted in the United Nations along with Russia and China
India has voted against the UN resolution on ‘Human rights situation in Iran’. Along with India, Russia and China also voted against the proposal. However, most countries were in favor of this proposal. This proposal was supported by 78 member countries while 30 countries including India, Russia, China voted against it. At the same time, India kept itself away from another important resolution in the United Nations on Ukraine.
India abstained from voting on a UN resolution on the ‘human rights situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine’. Most countries distanced themselves from this proposal. 79 countries including India abstained from voting while 78 countries supported the resolution. 15 UN member states voted against the resolution. Both these proposals were put for voting in the United Nations General Assembly on 19 December. In which India voted in favor of Iran and kept itself away from the resolution related to Ukraine.
Concern was expressed on human rights in Iran in the proposal
The UN resolution on Iran has expressed serious concern over numerous human rights violations in Iran. The proposal also includes no freedom of religion and belief. In particular, this includes unjustified restrictions on the Bahá’í sect’s ability to bury people in accordance with their faith, and attacks against their religious places. Other human rights violations include harassment, intimidation, torture, arbitrary arrests and detentions. The accompanying resolution states that hatred can be incited through official and unofficial media in Iran, which can lead to violence.
