Which patients will be admitted to ICU? Health Ministry issued guidelines

The government in the country has issued guidelines to hospitals to take decisions based on the needs of the patient for treatment under Intensive Care Unit (ICU). These guidelines state that seriously ill patients cannot be admitted to the ICU in the hospital if their relatives refuse.

These guidelines regarding ICU admission have been prepared by a panel of 24 top doctors specializing in critical care medicine. The panel has prepared a list of medical conditions under which the patient needs to be kept in the ICU.

What did the experts on the panel say?

Experts included in the panel have said that ICU is a limited resource, by admitting everyone in it, patients are not able to get beds in urgent cases, hence these guidelines are necessary. This will also increase transparency between the patient’s family and the hospital administration.

Who needs to be admitted to ICU?

In the guidelines issued in this regard, it has been clarified that if hospital treatment of seriously or incurably ill patients is not possible or available, and continuing treatment does not have any effect on the patient’s survival, then such patients should Should not be kept in ICU. The panel has said, there are some situations in which it is very important to keep the patient in ICU. In cases where the condition worsens after surgery or patients who may be at risk of complications after major surgery, they may need to be admitted to the ICU.
