Nepal’s first cricketer to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Sandeep Lamichhane, has been found guilty of raping a minor girl. Sandeep Lamichhane, who represented Delhi Capitals in IPL, has been sentenced to 8 years in jail by the Kathmandu court.
Sandeep sentenced to jail and fine
Sandeep Lamichhane, former captain of Nepal cricket team and one of the star cricketers of the country, has been sentenced to 8 years in jail. Sandeep Lamichhane was already convicted of raping a minor. A Kathmandu court, while hearing the case on Wednesday, sentenced the spinner to 8 years in jail. Apart from IPL, Sandeep Lamichhane has played in many other leagues of the world. Last year itself, the court had convicted Sandeep Lamichhane of raping a minor. A fine of Rs 300,000 (Nepali) was also imposed on this cricketer. Not only this, the victim was ordered to pay 200,000 Nepalese rupees as compensation.
Raped in hotel
This matter is of the year 2022. Sandeep Lamichhane was accused by a minor of rape in a hotel in Kathmandu in August 2022. After this he came out on bail. After getting the bail, Sandeep Lamichhane also joined the team. He also played many international matches during that period. Sandeep approached the Supreme Court in February last year. He had sought permission to tour UAE for the ICC Cricket World Cup League-2. The court also accepted his request. He was released on bail in January 2023.
Played in two seasons of IPL
23-year-old Sandeep Lamichhane represented Delhi Capitals for two seasons. He has also helped Nepal win many matches with his leg spin. He is the first cricketer from Nepal to play in IPL. He wore the jersey of Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the years 2018 and 2020. Sandeep has played 51 ODI and 52 T20 International matches in his career so far. During this period, he took a total of 112 wickets in ODI and 98 wickets in T20 international cricket. In his overall T20 career, he has taken 206 wickets in 144 matches.
