Genocide case against Israel, what decision did the International Criminal Court give?
The UN’s top international court has asked Israel to stop the massacre in Gaza and punish those who instigate such activities. The court said, “The State of Israel will take all measures within its power to prevent all acts within the scope of Article II of the Genocide Convention.” However, the court refused to order a ceasefire, which was plaintiff South Africa’s primary request. So far, more than 26,000 Palestinians have been claimed to have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza. Israel launched a retaliatory attack on the Gaza Strip after the Hamas attack on October 7.
What decision did the court give?
Israel must take steps to stop its troops from committing genocide against Palestinians, the court said today. The court said it would not dismiss South Africa’s genocide case against Israel. Israel has described South Africa’s allegations as false and “grossly distorted”, and says it makes every effort to avoid civilian casualties.
What did the court say on the situation in Gaza
Court President John E. Donoghue said, “The Court is acutely aware of the extent of the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in the region and is deeply concerned about the continued loss of life and human suffering.” South Africa had asked the court to call on Israel “to immediately suspend its military operations in and against Gaza.” However, the court rejected South Africa’s petition, but did not give any order regarding the ceasefire.
Israel has rejected the allegations
Friday’s decision, however, is only interim while the full case brought by South Africa could take years to be considered. Israel has rejected the charge of genocide and had also urged the court to dismiss the charges. South Africa has urged judges to take action to protect Palestinians in Gaza.
