Pakistan: Imran Khan and Qureshi given status of high-profile prisoners, will have to do such work in jail

According to the information, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, despite being high-profile prisoners, will have to face rigorous imprisonment in the jail premises. Both the leaders were sentenced to 10 years in prison by a special court in the cipher case and are being held in Rawalpindi’s high-security Adiala jail where the trial against them took place.

Kept as prisoners in different
According to ‘The Express Tribune’ newspaper, 71-year-old Khan and 67-year-old Qureshi are being kept separately as high-profile prisoners as one of them is a former Prime Minister and the other is the Foreign Minister. Khan is the founding chairman of his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party while Qureshi is the vice-chairman of the party. It said both leaders were taking advantage of the same facilities given to prisoners in a better category prison than they had before their convictions, including access to exercise machines.

Jail uniform has been given, but it is not mandatory for Imran to wear it
According to sources, both of them have been given two pairs of jail uniforms as per jail rules. However, since PTI’s founding chairman Khan is facing trial in other cases, it has not been made mandatory for him to wear jail uniform. Both the prisoners will also do labor in the (jail) premises as per the written order. Quoting sources, the report said that high-profile prisoners cannot be kept among the common prisoners in jail factories, kitchens, hospitals, gardens etc., hence, they are assigned maintenance work or any other work assigned by the jail administration.
