BJP state president Mahendra Bhatt filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections on Thursday in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and state in-charge Dushyant Gautam. Bhatt completed all the formalities for this process to be completed in the Assembly premises.

Political meaning of making Mahendra Bhatt the candidate
The party has made BJP state president Mahendra Bhatt the Rajya Sabha candidate. The Rajya Sabha seat had become vacant after the completion of the six-year tenure of former Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni. Elections for this seat are to be held on 27th February.

There is political significance in making Mahendra Bhatt a candidate before the Lok Sabha elections. Bhatt is a Brahmin face and the decision of the BJP central leadership to send him to the Rajya Sabha is being seen as an exercise to balance the caste equations. Until the BJP leadership had decided on the Rajya Sabha ticket, the possibility of repeating Anil Baluni was also considered.
