Uttarakhand: Both father and son are contenders for Lok Sabha elections from Haridwar. 35 contenders were discussed in the meeting

Former Congress CM Harish Rawat and his son Virendra Rawat have submitted their claim for the Haridwar seat for the Lok Sabha elections. On the other hand, Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya has given up on contesting from Almora-Pithoragarh Lok Sabha seat. The names of 35 contenders for the five Lok Sabha seats were discussed in the Congress Screening Committee meeting held in Delhi on Saturday.
Harish Rawat has been MP from Haridwar Lok Sabha seat in 2009. After this, BJP has been invincible on this seat for two consecutive times. Harish Rawat’s claim on this seat while saying no on the ticket from Haridwar is surprising. Son Virendra Rawat has also staked claim on this seat along with his father.
According to sources, Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya was considered a strong contender for the Almora-Pithoragarh seat, but he has given up on contesting the elections. It is being told that he has done this on the basis of this Lok Sabha being a large constituency and also on the basis of not being active here for a long time.
Discuss local issues and situations
At the same time, the party is also considering fielding Pritam Singh in Tehri, Ganesh Godiyal in Pauri and Karan Mahara in Nainital Lok Sabha seat. On Saturday, a meeting of the Congress Screening Committee was held in Delhi under the chairmanship of Bhagat Charan Das, in which 35 contenders were discussed between state in-charge Kumari Selja, member Yashomati Thakur, state president Karan Mahara and Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya.
During the conversation, the equations, contesting candidates, local issues and situation of each Lok Sabha seat were discussed. On the other hand, at the organizational level, a survey is being conducted for the contenders for all the seats. After the completion of the survey, the second meeting of the screening committee will be called soon, out of which a panel of three to five names of contenders for each Lok Sabha will be prepared and sent to the Central Election Committee.
