Indian Union Muslim League reaches Supreme Court, demands ban on Citizenship Amendment Act

The government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) on March 11. Amidst all the opposition to this notification of the government, this matter has now reached the Supreme Court.

Indian Union Muslim League has filed a petition before the Supreme Court demanding a stay on the new Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) Rules 2024. The petition demands a stay on the continued operation of the disputed provisions of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 and the Citizenship Amendment Rules 2024.

The petition filed in the court states that ‘the Act and Rules will result in creation of valuable rights and grant of citizenship only to persons belonging to certain religions, which may lead to an unsuccessful situation during the pendency of the present writ petition. ‘

Let us tell you, this is being considered a big step from the government before the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Under this, six minority communities from three neighboring countries – Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh will be given Indian citizenship.

It is noteworthy that this law provides citizenship to those minorities who are facing religious persecution in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The decision came before the implementation of the code of conduct
This step comes before the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into force ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024. MCC comes into force during elections and prevents the government from making any major announcements.

Who will get Indian citizenship after the implementation of CAA rules?
The government has today announced the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. In such a situation, people of Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Parsi, Buddhist and Jain religion coming from three Muslim majority countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh without any documents will get citizenship. The power to grant citizenship will be in the hands of the central government. This citizenship will be given to non-Muslim migrants coming to India from these countries till December 31, 2014.
