Opposition leaders protest against CAA, say – trying to save the sinking ship
Before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Citizenship Amendment Act has been implemented across the country. The amendment in the law had received the President’s approval four years ago but it could not be implemented. Now the opposition leaders have criticized the central government’s decision to issue its notification just before the elections and have raised questions on the timing. Read who said what.
Regarding the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act, NCP founder Sharad Pawar said, “There is a possibility that the Election Commission will announce the elections in the next three-four days. “The central government has implemented such a law before the election schedule is released in three-four days, which means a direct attack on the parliamentary democratic process, which we condemn.”
Congress President Mallikarjun Khadane said that CAA is discriminatory and against the basic principles and spirit of the Indian Constitution. The CAA rules notified just before the elections show how conscious the BJP is about the politics of polarization.”
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “After ruling the country for ten years, the Modi government has brought CAA before the elections. They want to bring people from neighboring countries to India and settle them. Why? To create our vote bank, when our youth do not have employment then who will provide employment to the people coming from neighboring countries?
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also opposed the implementation of CAA and said, “It is contrary to the basic principle that in India, whatever be your religion, whatever be your caste, whatever be your language, whatever be your colour, It doesn’t matter which part of the country you live in. If you are a citizen of India, you have the same rights as everyone else. “Some clever lawyers will take it up before the Supreme Court and challenge its constitutionality.”
AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi said, “You understand the chronology, first the election season will come, then the rules of CAA will come, our objections on CAA remain the same. CAA is divisive and based on the ideology of Godse, who wanted to make Muslims second class citizens. Provide asylum to any persecuted person but citizenship should not be based on religion or nationality. “Along with NPR-NRC, CAA aims to target only Muslims.”
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also gave his reaction on the CAA notification. He said, “When the citizens of the country are forced to go out for livelihood, then what will happen by bringing ‘citizenship law’ for others? The public has now understood the BJP’s game of politics of distraction. The BJP government should explain why lakhs of citizens gave up their citizenship of the country during their 10 years of rule.”
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said, “Now, as elections are approaching, Prime Minister Modi wants to save his sinking ship by cynically reviving the Citizenship Amendment Act, exploiting religious sentiments for political gains.”
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, “The purpose of the central government’s notification of the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act in view of the elections is to unsettle the country. This aims to divide people, incite communal sentiments and weaken the basic principles of the Constitution. This can only be seen as part of the Hindutva communal agenda of the Sangh Parivar.
CM Vijayan said, “Granting citizenship to non-Muslims who came to India from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan on or before December 31, 2014, while denying citizenship to Muslims is a flagrant violation of the Constitution. The LDF government has reiterated several times that the Citizenship Amendment Act, which treats Muslim minorities as second-class citizens, will not be implemented in Kerala.”
