Congress gives ticket to boxer Vijender Singh in Mathura, will give tough competition to Hema Malini
Congress has fielded international boxer Bijender Singh to counter the glamor of cine star Hema Malini, who was a two-time MP from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. Congress has declared Vijender Singh as its candidate from Mathura Lok Sabha seat on Saturday. This will also attract the Jat majority voters of the district.
Mathura Lok Sabha seat has gone to Congress in the India alliance. Boxer Vijender Singh has been fielded from here. Vijender Singh had also contested the Lok Sabha elections from Delhi last time. Actually, BJP’s Hema Malini has been a two-time MP from Mathura.
Interesting contest between Vijender Singh and Hema Malini
In the Lok Sabha elections 2014, Hema Malini defeated RLD national president Jayant Chaudhary by about three lakh votes. In the Lok Sabha elections 2019, he defeated Kunwar Narendra Singh of RLD by a record number of votes. That too when Mathura is considered the stronghold of RLD. While Congress, which was once a party with a better support base, has been marginalized in the last several elections, the contest will become interesting after Vijender Singh enters the fray.
This time Lok Sabha elections are more high profile
Mathura parliamentary seat has always been considered high profile. Sometimes considering the stature of the candidates contesting the elections and sometimes considering the political equations. This time the Lok Sabha elections have become more high profile than the last Lok Sabha elections, where Congress has fielded an internationally renowned player against Hema Malini.
Five reasons that can upset Hema Malini
- Vijender Singh can get caste votes in Beniwal Jat dominated Mathura.
- BJP candidate’s relatively less interaction with the public may become an issue in the elections.
- Branding of Congress candidate will be done on the basis of youth and age criteria.
- The message of direct connection with the public will be given by taking to the streets
- Congress has worked on the strategy of defeating glamor with glamour, which may create problems for the BJP.
