Relief to Congress from Income Tax Department, no drastic steps will be taken during Lok Sabha elections

The troubled Congress party has got a big relief in the matter of notice sent by Income Tax during the Lok Sabha elections. The Income Tax Department has given a statement in the Supreme Court that it will not take any drastic steps to recover Rs 1700 crore from the Congress party during the Lok Sabha elections. According to the information, the Income Tax Department says that it does not want to create trouble for any party during the elections. Congress party is expected to get relief after this statement of the department.

Will not take any drastic steps now – Income Tax

The Supreme Court took on record the submissions of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Income Tax Department, that no coercive action would be taken against the Congress party in view of the Lok Sabha elections. The Supreme Court bench recorded the statement of SG Mehta that no coercive action will be taken with respect to the demand of Rs 3500 crore till the next date. The main appeals will be listed for hearing on merits in July.

Request for hearing in June

The Income Tax Department has requested the court to post this tax recovery case from Congress for hearing in June. The Income Tax Department says that it does not want to create trouble for any party during the elections. Congress party is expected to get relief after this statement of the department.

Demand for tax of Rs 3,567 crore

According to PTI, just before the Lok Sabha elections, Congress had once again received a new notice from the Income Tax Department, through which a tax of Rs 1,745 crore was demanded for the assessment year 2014-15 to 2016-17. Sources gave this information on Sunday. The Income Tax Department has so far demanded a total tax of Rs 3,567 crore from Congress. The Congress party had said that the authorities have already withdrawn Rs 135 crore from the party’s accounts for tax demands related to previous years.
