To stop China, America, Britain and Australia are ready to start talks on including new members in the AUKUS security agreement. Washington is insisting on including Japan in this.
The defense ministers of these countries will announce the discussion on pillar two of the agreement on Monday. It commits members to jointly develop quantum computing, hypersonics, AI and cyber technologies.
Important efforts against China
They are not considering expanding the first column, which is designed to deliver nuclear-powered attack submarines to Australia. The AAKS, formed by the three countries in 2021, is part of a significant effort against China’s growing power in the Indo-Pacific region. China has described the agreement as dangerous and warned that it could give rise to a regional arms race.
These countries will conduct joint maritime exercises
Meanwhile, the Chinese military said on Sunday that it has conducted maritime and air patrols and all activities disrupting the South China Sea are under control. This step of China has come after the announcement of naval exercises by America and its allies. In fact, the defense chiefs of America, Japan, Australia and the Philippines had announced on Saturday that they would conduct joint maritime exercises to protect the rule of law.
